HS2 is set to offer paid summer placements for Midlands-based undergraduates to gain valuable work experience.
Balfour Beatty Building Partner VINCI (BBV) HS2 is launching the program to help students gain experience related to their area of specialization.
The program will run over 8 weeks starting July 4, 2022 and roles will be based in Birmingham, North and South Warwickshire and Staffordshire.
Opportunities will be available with BBV’s civil, commercial, design, construction, project control and planning teams.
This follows the recent announcement that HS2 has reached a major milestone on its online jobs board.
HS2 commented on the importance of providing opportunities for young people in the rail industry.
Julie Venn-Morton, HS2 Skills Manager for the West Midlands, said: “The construction of HS2 already supports more than 20,000 jobs.
“We anticipate that approximately 14,000 additional roles will be needed in the months and years to come.
“[We face] a number of skills challenges in our sector, including an aging workforce.
“[With] With a decade of construction work ahead of us as HS2 expands north, it is imperative that we create meaningful career paths for the region’s thriving local talent pool.
BBV already has pre-existing relationships with Birmingham City University to ensure graduates from the area benefit from opportunities with HS2.
By offering 30 undergraduate students the opportunity for a paid summer internship, BBV strengthens this partnership.
BBV spoke about the role programs like this play in motivating more people to take up a career in rail.
Shilpi Akbar, Head of Stakeholders and Communities at BBV, said: “Our undergraduate program allows students to earn, learn and practice their studies.
“[This provides] the best possible start to their professional career.
“We hope the opportunity to play a part in building HS2 will inspire students to consider a career at BBV when they graduate.”
