The company promotes an intern to cover education

A career in journalism was a natural fit for Olivia Malick, whose father was a journalism professor at West Brook High School for over a decade.

She has also always loved creative writing, although with no particular interest in classical literature, and has served as editor of the West Brook Times and now Lamar University Press.

But it was a 13-week internship with The Enterprise that gave her a glimpse of her future, she said.

“I have been in college for four years to prepare for this moment. The internship gave me the opportunity to see what my future would look like, ”she said. “It’s exciting but anxiety-provoking in a good way.”

Malick started as the Enterprise education reporter this week.

She ended up focusing on reporting because that is the job that was open, and she is already looking forward to connecting with districts in Region 5.

“There is so much going on in education. It’s not just about having kids in class every day. There are so many factors about how school districts operate and the impacts they have on the lives of students, teachers and people who live in the district. I really want to try to tell all these stories. I hope I can reach them all.

In his spare time, Malick enjoys reading and researching other world events that do not directly affect his work. In fact, she spent several hours during her internship in the Company’s story archive reading about various local topics.

“I am also delighted to be returning to theaters,” she added.

While local media sometimes get bad press for journalist turnover, Malick noted that his work at Beaumont is not a means to an end.

Instead, she hopes to stay awhile.

“My passion is for Southeast Texas, and I don’t see that changing,” she said. “People should feel confident reading my material because it’s not just a job. It is also my community. This is where I have lived all my life, and I care about what is going on here.

Malick will graduate from Lamar University in December with a Bachelor of Science in Communication with a major in Journalism.

While Enterprise reporters still work out of the office most of the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Malick says email is the best way to send him story advice. She can be reached at [email protected] She is also on Twitter @OliviaMalick.
