ARLINGTON – It’s been a productive summer at Mack Molding, and 15 students have been interns this summer to help with this production.

Mack hosted 13 interns at its headquarters in Arlington, one at its Cavendish facility, and one at Mack Prototype, Gardner, MA. While this year’s cohort was primarily engineering students, other majors represented included nursing, finance, and business administration.

“Due to COVID and our desire to give our interns the safest environment possible, this was not the largest internship program we have ever had,” said Mack Molding President Jeff Somple . “In terms of impact, however, this group has shone. After a year of confinement and distance learning, our students were delighted to be there to gain real hands-on experience. “

The company’s modern internship program was established in 2011 in response to demands for workforce development. Each intern is assigned a project based on the actual needs of the company and approved by top management, which provides them with a hands-on experience that they can show to potential employers.

Besides work, Mack offers his interns a host of other skills and networking experiences. This includes a series of ‘Lunch’ n Learns’, where senior managers and seasoned employees present various aspects of the business, organize tours of the facilities and help develop skills such as maintaining a professional presence on the premises. social networks. At the end of the summer, students turn roles and present the results of their projects to their peers and Mack’s senior management. In addition, interns are matched with young professionals who serve as mentors.

“I really enjoyed my time at Mack, especially finding out how all of the different departments contribute to the output of finished products,” said Nicole McCarvill, intern at Mack, mechanical engineering graduate from Stony Brook University, in Stony Brook, NY. It was pretty cool to see how my efforts to organize a production line directly impacted operations, making it easier for others to work and improving productivity.

This year’s program was funded in part by the 2021 Vermont Department of Labor Internship Program. Designed to connect Vermont employers with intern students from regional technical centers or post-secondary institutions, the program helps develop the region’s workforce by giving students a chance for careers in the state.

“The State of Vermont shares Mack’s commitment to giving these young professionals the opportunity to see how rewarding a career and life in Southern Vermont can be,” said Somple. “As we all strive to recover from the pandemic, retain young professionals and attract them, Vermont is essential to the strength of the industries that do business here.”

To date, Mack has hosted over 100 interns, more than 20 of whom return after graduation. The company’s most recent hires include manufacturing engineers Andy Romack and Benjamin Vadakin, and accounts payable specialist Austin Hawley.

Romack, of Cambridge, NY, is now based at the company’s headquarters. Previously, he was a design and tooling engineering intern, learning about Mack’s processes and culture while assisting in the production of injection molded parts and medical devices.

Vadakin, of North Bennington, is based at Mack’s head office. As an intern, Vadakin contributed to the development of electromechanical devices.

Hawley, of Arlington, is now an Accounts Payable Specialist, returning to Mack full time as a Manufacturing Clerk after being an Intern in 2019. As an Intern, Hawley supported the inventory process from start to finish. end.
