Mbalula assesses Metrorail Southern Line infrastructure upgrade works – SABC News

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula assesses infrastructure upgrades to the Metrorail Southern Line which was vandalized when service was halted due to the pandemic.

It comes after the Western Cape obtained a certificate to operate the new Electric Motor Unit (EMU).

EMU is less dependent on overhead wires being vandalized and stolen.

The Cape Flats and Southern Lines are the only two lines that conducted trial operations of the new EMUs in the Western Cape during off-peak hours.

“We are committed to restoring commuter rail services and returning the 10 priority rail corridors to service this calendar year. We are pleased that the progress we have made puts us firmly on the path to fulfilling this commitment, says Mbalula.

“As part of PRASA’s integrated security strategy, a training process for 149 military veterans and other protective services personnel employed by PRASA in the Western Cape to safeguard and protect railway infrastructure, personnel and commuters was launched in December 2021,” adds Mbalula. .
