Kings force Davion Mitchell to limit workout time in gym

Sacramento Kings rookie Davion Mitchell has been busy working out in the gym ahead of the start of the 2021-22 season. In fact, Mitchell trained so much that the team began to limit their training time.

Kings goaltender Tyrese Haliburton made the hilarious revelation to reporters this week when asked about his rookie teammate. The most striking thing about Mitchell, said Haliburton, was how hard he worked on the pitch and in the gym.

“I think he works so hard it’s no surprise he’s where he is and has had the success he’s had in his basketball career,” said Haliburton. “So it’s refreshing for me to see a guy work like this. It makes me work harder and I hope everyone sees it and it works that way for everyone.

Mitchell has been busy adjusting to his new team ahead of next week’s training camp. Much of the squad has been to Sacramento recently and Mitchell has even had the opportunity to participate in pickup matches with Haliburton and De’Aaron Fox.

Part of adjusting the transition to NBA play is the 82-game schedule. Mitchell only played 30 games last season when Baylor won the national championship, so the Kings want to limit his training time to make sure he’s fresh for the long season.

He always tries to make that adjustment and limit his training time.

“They tell me to come home but I feel like I just have to work on so many things,” Mitchell said. “They tell me to get out of the gym, to go and rest. It’s 82 games, I’ve never played that long in a season before, so they help me out a bit, but there is so much that I want to work on. But, yes, they kick me out of here.

Mitchell pointed out the amount of free time he now has in the NBA. He’s kept a pretty busy schedule at college between classes and workouts and is starting to realize that he can’t spend every free minute he has at the gym.

Of course, it’s never a bad trait to constantly want to train. However, Mitchell will need to strike a balance between training time and rest, especially with training camp starting next week.

By all accounts, however, Mitchell’s displayed work ethic really resonated with his teammates.
