Interns rewarded following a high-tech synthesis event


After a grueling 56-hour Capstone event earlier in the same week, trainees for the 2021 Advanced Engineering Course were honored at their graduation ceremony on the evening of Friday, August 13.

The program was led by Dr Erich Devendorf, ACE Program Director and Computer Engineer in the Information Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory.

About 100 friends and family gathered in the auditorium of the Innovare Advancement Center that evening to honor and wish good luck to the 36 ACE interns who completed the 10-week program.

The ceremony began with the presentation of the colors and national anthems of the United States, United Kingdom and Switzerland, representing the three countries of ACE 2021 interns.

At the graduation ceremony, trainees received school leaving certificates and ACE coins. Keynote speaker Dr Shiu-Kai Chin, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Syracuse University, addressed the graduates. Dignitaries, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney and Assembly Member Marianne Buttenschon, were also on hand with kind words to wish the graduates good luck.

Matthew Rodrick of Newcastle University has been named ACE 2021 Promotion Major.

Earlier in the week, the trainees participated in a 54-hour Capstone event where they applied their previously acquired knowledge to achieve mission objectives as part of a computer warfare simulation exercise.

“The winning team captured key lessons from the ACE program to merge the concepts of cyber and combat with leadership skills in a contested environment,” said Devendorf.

ACE Capstone 2021 unfolded as a regional rivalry between three powers. Participants had to create a plan to translate operational objectives into tactical actions achieved through kinetic and cybernetic effects. A rich battlespace cyberspace provided the fabric to couple the cyber and kinetic realms with the ability to attack traditional network enclaves, aircraft, integrated air defense systems, and supply / logistics systems.

The ACE team assessed the success of the exercise based on the participants’ ability to meet their operational goals while denying the adversary theirs. In 2003, Dr Kamal Jabbour, ST, Senior Information Assurance Scientist at the Directorate of Information, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL / RI), Rome, launched the Advanced Engineering Course (ACE ) Cyber ​​Security Boot Camp. The 10-week program educates trainees in the science of information assurance and trains them in the art of cyber warfare. The leadership development component of ACE focuses on problem solving through technical excellence, communication skills and punctuality.
