0

The women on the Forbes India W-Power 2021 List may seem to have little in common, but the opposite is true: an insatiable hunger, a strong work ethic, the ability to persist, their integrity and humility unites them.

As Falguni Nayar rang the opening bell on the Bombay Stock Exchange, marking the historic public market debut of her beauty startup Nykaa, she said: “I launched Nykaa [Sanskrit for heroine] at 50 without experience. I hope my trip can inspire each of you to be the Nykaa of your life.

Our W-Power list strives to feature such super women who have taken charge, coped with crises, and scripted their success. We scoured primary and secondary sources to come up with a long list of names and then narrowed it down to 20 based on their accomplishments over the past year and their impact in general. The list is by no means exhaustive, but is representative of women from diverse fields such as business and science, entertainment, social impact, and sport.

Some of the game-changing women include Rani Rampal, who led the women’s hockey team to a historic fourth place at the Olympics; Lizzie Chapman, co-founder and CEO of fast-growing “Buy Now, Pay Later” startup ZestMoney; and Dr Priya Abraham, director of the National Institute of Virology in Pune, who led the team that pioneered India’s RT-PCR methodology to begin Covid-19 testing.

We have known names like Arundhati Bhattacharya who, instead of opting for an easy life after his stint at SBI, chose to go beyond his comfort zone by leading Salesforce’s operations in India. Technology, by its own admission, is not its strength but one that it is determined to make of it. Then there are new discoveries like 23-year-old environmental activist Disha Ravi and IPS officer Rema Rajeshwari, who tackles fake news in backward and poorly literate areas of India through storytelling and writing. cultural performances.

The women on the list may seem to have little in common, but the opposite is true: an insatiable hunger, a strong work ethic, the ability to persevere, their integrity and humility unites them. They are bold, sassy and courageous. Through their chosen areas of work, they empower people, address unmet need, and make the world a better place.

And just as Nykaa’s scorching debut on the stock market shows – the stock price rose 80% on the first trading day – they make it clear that we are better off when more heroines star.
