POSITION TITLE: Analyst
DEPARTMENT: Research and development in baseball

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Colorado Rockies Organization is seeking someone with a passion for baseball and data analysis to join our growing baseball research and development team. This person will focus on data analysis to support decision making in all facets of baseball including player evaluation, roster building, player development, advanced scouting and game strategy. .

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop statistical models and perform general quantitative analysis to support all areas of baseball operations and organizational decision making.
  • Design and create informative data visualizations for use in automated reports or ad hoc projects.
  • Effectively present completed projects and communicate new ideas to decision makers and other staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of the latest data analysis techniques and data sources to aid in the continued development of the department.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS / JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in statistics, data science, computer science, machine learning or related field.
  • Experience analyzing datasets and training statistical models using R or Python.
  • Experience working with SQL type databases, such as MySQL, SQL Server or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience collaborating on code with the use of source control, such as Git.

RELEVANT SKILLS

  • Familiarity with the rules of baseball and an understanding of sabermetry highly desirable.
  • Passion for baseball and familiarity with current baseball research.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and spoken.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity.
  • Ability to develop and maintain successful working relationships.

WORKING CONDITIONS / WORKING HOURS

  • Ability to work flexible hours with long hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Some travel will be necessary.
  • Constant, punctual and regular attendance.

POSITION TITLE: Baseball operations analyst
DEPARTMENT: Baseball operations

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Colorado Rockies Organization is seeking a full-time Baseball Operations Analyst in the Baseball Operations Department. This person will join the Baseball Operations team and support operations and analysis initiatives within the department. Within operations, they will assist with salary arbitration, roster administration, understanding and applying industry rules and regulations, administrative tasks and ad hoc projects. Within the analysis, they will participate in research relating to contract markets, baseball economics, statistical analysis, field strategy and ad-hoc. In addition, they will interact with Major League staff, players and the front office to implement and operationalize organizational initiatives. The position requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, willingness to learn, ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, solve problems creatively, work in cross-functional teams and have a passion for baseball.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
OPERATIONS

  • Participate in the daily administrative tasks of the baseball operations department.
  • Use MLB and Rockies proprietary software systems to assist with list management and reporting.
  • Support the salary arbitration process.
  • Interpret and apply the rules and regulations of Major League Baseball.
  • Complete ad hoc projects and implement initiatives as directed by Front Office and Major League staff.
  • Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the service’s operational processes.

ANALYSIS

  • Work independently or as part of a team to support contract markets, baseball economics, analysis, field strategy and ad hoc research projects.
  • Collaborate with the research and development team to develop robust analyzes and actionable insights to enable key business decisions.
  • Lead, distill and present research projects.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education and work experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (preferably in an analytical field or related experience)

RELEVANT SKILLS

  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint and willingness to learn new products. Experience with SQL is a plus.
  • Ability to solve complex problems and develop creative solutions with great attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working with large data sets to develop actionable insights.
  • Ability to work within deadlines with competing priorities in a fast paced and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams and the ability to influence without authority.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Passionate about baseball.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including long hours, weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Travel can be requested.
  • Constant, punctual and regular attendance.
