Trader Joe’s Co. was sued for racial discrimination by two black women who allege they suffered racial discrimination while working in company stores in Atlanta, then encountered many of the same conditions after being transferred to offices. locations in southern California.
Josey Chappell, co-represented by civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, and Angel Robertson filed their lawsuits in Los Angeles Superior Court on December 13, seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. Chappell was hired as a crew member at a Trader Joe’s store in Atlanta in January 2020 and moved to a location on National Boulevard near Palms on June 22 of this year, according to the lawsuit.
Having previously been racially discriminated against at work in the Atlanta store, Chappell encountered some of the same attitudes after at National Boulevard stores, where she was subjected to derogatory comments against blacks, suffered a harsh treatment, been given unwanted and difficult tasks and – unlike non-Black employees – was heavily screened for work errors, according to the lawsuit.

Chappell was again abused by her co-workers after a late September transfer to the Westchester store, so she was transferred to the Culver City store in October after a discussion of her complaints with Trader Joe’s regional vice president, the lawsuit says. .
However, Chappell continued to experience “discriminatory, aggressive, harassing, hostile and retaliatory treatment” despite multiple store transfers and having provided documentation of her experiences in each, the lawsuit says.

However, the work environment changed when the store manager wrote a poor job review for Robertson and made it available to all store supervisors, according to the lawsuit.

Robertson was suddenly given tasks that required heavy lifting and her training to be a flight attendant was cut short, the suit says.
